October is globally recognised as a month of awareness, reflection, and action. A time to unite against one of the most common cancers that affect women: breast cancer.
In Mozambique, cancer awareness continues to grow, but many people still face late diagnoses due to lack of screening access, limited information, and cultural stigma around discussing health issues. This month, Mediplus joins hands with our members, communities, and health partners to shine a light on prevention, early detection, and the power of informed healthcare choices.

Knowledge and early detection save lives
Breast cancer remains the leading cancer among women worldwide, and its impact in our community is significant. According to WHO data, breast cancer accounts for nearly one-third of female cancer diagnoses in Sub-Saharan Africa.
However, when detected early, breast cancer is one of the most treatable cancers, and survival rates increase dramatically with regular check-ups and awareness.
Understanding the risks
While no one can eliminate the risk, understanding the factors can help reduce it.
Common risk factors include:
• Family history of breast or ovarian cancer.
• Being over the age of 40.
• Hormonal imbalances or long-term use of hormone replacement therapy.
• Obesity and lack of physical activity.
• Excessive alcohol consumption.
Practical tips for prevention and early detection
1. Perform regular self-examinations: once a month, ideally after your menstrual cycle, to detect any changes or lumps in your breasts.
2. Schedule clinical breast exams: every 6 to 12 months with a healthcare provider.
3. Mammograms: women aged 40 and above should do them regularly as recommended by their doctor.
4. Maintain a balanced diet: include fruits, vegetables, and foods rich in antioxidants like leafy greens, papaya, and beans.
5. Limit alcohol and processed foods: both are linked to increased cancer risks.
6. Stay active: even 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily can lower hormone levels that fuel cancer cell growth.
7. Know your family history: if breast cancer runs in your family, discuss genetic testing or earlier screening options with your doctor.
Early detection is not just a medical step; it is an act of self-love and empowerment.
